Let’s talk about product packaging and why it’s important to make sure your product is beautifully packaged.
First, it’s another important step to impressing your customer and hopefully creating a repeat buyer. I know from personal experience when I receive an item from a fellow Etsy shop owner and the packaging is pretty – it makes me that much more excited about getting a new item! Furthermore, I’m impressed that they spent that extra time and money to make their packaging just a little more special. I also tend to think the item is of higher quality before even opening the package. (which ends up being true 9 times out of 10) Do you know what else that makes me think? “What else can I buy from this person for my mom, aunts, friends..? This packaging already looks like a beautifully wrapped gift ready to go!” That’s when the shop owner’s extra mile pays off even more.
Here’s a perfect example of this. Emma of CandidateAndCo takes amazing photos of her jewelry. They caught my eye right away when scrolling through Etsy. She has a white marble background + has the earrings sitting on another material which is angled. Not to mention, the succulent plant and perfect lighting makes the image come together cleanly. The image has enough going on to draw your attention, but is still clean and simple enough to not take away from the earrings.
If you sell gift sets or any gifts in general, this is something you can add that makes the person receiving the item feel extra special. IndieSoapsCo has the perfect example of a beautifully packaged spa gift set. You can customize the name on the box as well as the message on the inside. Each item also has its own label with the name of what it is and the shop’s name. Beautiful!
This is important info you need to include if needed. You don’t want your customers to accidentally ruin your hard work because you didn’t include proper instructions. For example, Ronda from CuriousPurplePig makes hand-crocheted items. (Cool name btw 😉) She includes a tag with care instructions for her washcloths + her logo. Looks pretty and is helpful info for her customers.
You want to include the invoice that Etsy provides unless it’s a gift being sent directly to the recipient. The invoice tells them exactly what they ordered and your shop’s info so they can contact you with any questions.
It also helps them remember which shop they bought what from as some people buy many different things from different shops at the same time. Plus, having the invoice printed out will help you keep each order organized as you complete and package each one. So including an invoice helps everyone!
One thing we’ve done with our Etsy shop is include a thank you card with a message that thanks them for their purchase, lets us know if they have any issues with their decal, letting them know we also threw in an extra gift for choosing our shop and offering a coupon for their next purchase. We also include our email address + phone number so they can contact us in many different ways. You want to make sure you are accessible if needed.

Charles founded his Etsy shop Wall Decal Source in 2012. He opened his decal shop and decided to create a nursery decal for his sisters new baby. Funnily enough he published the decal as an item for sale on his Etsy shop and people really liked it. Well a few years later and his shop has been almost completely taken over by nursery wall decals. He must still be a kid at heart. As Charles tested and tried all sorts of methods to expand his shop he stumbled upon a few simple formulas for consistently growing Etsy sales and views.
